LIfe of Fred Goldfish Lesson Plans

I can not believe it has been two years of using Life of Fred math for my youngest son. It seems like yesterday I was shocked about a math book reading like a story would be any help.

This school year we will start with Life of Fred Goldfish.

The two biggest things that have helped my son are playing math games and the math story line. I do think 4 plus 5 equals 9 will always be associated with vending machines.

I am very tempted to find an empty fish tank to use with Life of Fred Goldfish. I am sure we could attach pipe cleaners to the perimeter and colored paper for the area. I am sure we could weigh different amounts of water. If I was a super mom I would let him set up the tank for a goldfish.

Life of Fred Goldfish: Extra Resources

  • Chapters 4 and 5
    • Introduce multiplication by showing fast adding problems.
    • Watch Times Tales DVD to introduce the larger facts. My son likes the big picture and lots of review. We will watch this multiple times. I also have a the flip chart so he can retell me the stories.
    • The 3 tables taught by using your fingers.
  • Chapter 6
  • Chapter 7
    • Polygons poem. Seems like a great thing to read with Life of Fred Goldfish. Maybe we could write a simile about polygons.
  • Chapters 8 and 9
  • Chapters 10 and 11
  • Chapter 12
    • Introduce Area with the Story of Area. Play hopscotch and have a sleeping bag ready for students to act out parts of the story.
    • Watch the Area Song on Youtube.
  • Chapter 13
  • Chapter 15
  • Chapter 17
    • The 3 tables review with playing a matching game with flashcards. Match the problem with the answer. I found free printable fact cards and glued them to index cards and created answer cards on index cards too. Then played a matching game.
  • Chapter 19
    • Create a bar graph on the amount of water different sizes sponges hold. This will be a great review of lessons from the book Life of Fred Goldfish.
    • Estimate how many of the biggest sponge would fill a container.
    • Calculate the perimeter and area of the sponges.
